Major state office buildings saw an average electricity use reduction of 22.8% during the first six months of 2001, compared with the same six-month period in 2000. These reductions saved taxpayers nearly $750,000 in utility bills through the first half of the year. Meanwhile, local governments and water and wastewater agencies implemented energy conservation and efficiency measures in their facilities and launched extensive outreach campaigns to encourage smart energy and water use in their communities.
